AAPYO extends support to ANSU

ITANAGAR, Sept 07: The All Arunachal Pradesh Youth Organization (AAPYO) has extended support to ANSU for its proposed 36 hours Capital bandh from September 12.

Further questioning the state government why independent home minister is yet to be appointed, it said, there is no proper check on the increasing crime rate in the twin Capital.

Meanwhile, in another release, the All Capital Complex Market Volunteer Committee (ACCMVC) has opposed to it.

It said, we appeal all the business community of Capital Complex and the market welfare associations to support and cooperate with the district administration by opening their shops on the bandh day.

It said to ANSU, bandh call is not a solution but it is harassment to the daily wage earners. The vegetable vendors are the worst sufferers as their stock are ruined if not sold on time. And then their earning, which depends on their daily earning is lost. Why is it that the business communities are always targeted during bandhs and not the government offices?

ANSU should rather talk it out with the government, it held.

Over 150 women given self-defense training by AKA

Staff Reporter

ITANAGAR, Sept 07: Over 150 women, including students, housewives and government employees, have been given free self-defence and martial art (karate) training by Arunachal Karate Do Association (AKA) here from July 20.

Designed specially for women, the training aimed at helping the women ward off trouble and stay physically fit in view of the rising incidents of rape/molestation against the weaker section of the society in the state in particular and the country as whole, said AKA president Sensai Likha Tara.

While informing about the training, which was conducted in three different training centres—two in Itanagar and at Naharlagun -- simultaneously by expert trainers from July 20 on every Saturday and Sunday, Tara informed that AKA was the first among karate associations in North East to respond to the decision of All India Karate Federation (AIKF) to conduct free self defense training for women.

The decision was taken after the infamous gang-rape of a 23-year-old woman in New Delhi in December last year, he said.

While emphasizing the need of such training by each and every woman, he said that acquiring the knowledge and techniques of self defense and martial arts will increase courage and self-confidence of women to deal with the trouble makers.

“Such kind of training will not only make them stronger and physically fit but also increase their self-confidence to fight trouble makers,” he said, and urged the women, especially girl students to come forward and avail the opportunity of the free training.

To accommodate more trainees, especially students, AKA has decided to conduct similar training during vacation period from next year. It is also planning to conduct similar training throughout the state, including trouble-torn Tirap from next year.

Earlier, attending the closing ceremony as chief guest at Naharlagun today morning, Chief Councilor of Itanagar Municipal Aruni Higio highly praised the efforts of AKA and said that this training had assumed great importance and significance in view of the rising incidents of crime against women and girl child. She hoped the training will prove immensely beneficial for those who attended it.

Delivering few words of advises to the trainees, the chief councilor asked them to maintain strict discipline, respect elders and teachers to achieve success in life.

AAA donates two Crested Goshawks to Itanagar zoo

Dodum Yangfo

ITANAGAR, Sept 07: The Arunachal Adventure Association (AAA) today donated two Crested Goshawks that the association’s members found from a jungle near Sagalee to the Itanagar Biological Park (better known as Itanagar Zoo).

Crested Goshawks are diurnal raptors found mostly in Asia. AAA chairman Tarh Eha and assistant general secretary Chukhu Mama found the baby birds during a trip to Sagalee on some work. After rearing the birds for some weeks, the duo felt that the Itanagar Zoo would be the right place for the birds.

Biological Park curator Raya Flago and veterinary officer Dr Sorang Tadap received the birds. Both of them appreciated the AAA’s noble act and informed that the raptors would be quarantined for some weeks for observation, and then released in an enclosure “if everything goes right.”

Eha is an advocate by profession while Mama is a lecturer at a polytechnic college.

Wildlife conservation work, however, is not limited to the domain of educated Arunachalees; there have been instances of illiterate villagers rescuing wild animals and birds that fall under Schedule I and II of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.

Recently, one Dolang Ada of Old Palin in Kurung Kumey district rescued and donated a migratory bird of the plover species to the zoo. Dr Tadap informed that about 36 animals and birds have been donated in last few months.

“A sense of wildlife conservation has descended on our people. They are voluntarily donating animals and birds, which is a positive sign given the fact that Arunachal Pradesh is a hundred percent tribal state where animal hunting is commonplace,”  Flago reflected.

Besides the sense of satisfaction over rescuing animals and rehabilitating them through the wildlife authority, a donor can avail of free entry into the zoo if the rescued animal falls under Schedule I and II of the Wildlife Protection Act - apart from a certificate of recognition from the zoo authority.

The Arunachal Adventure Association has appealed to the people to work for wildlife conservation and voluntarily donate rescued animals to the zoo for their rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, another donation was made to the zoological park this afternoon – this time by advocate Tado Singdu, who donated a Ganges soft-shell tortoise (Trionyx Gangeticus) that he rescued from Niti Vihar.

Bandh culture instigated by politicians has become easy source of earning, he said, and urged the Apatani brethren to not allow mushrooming of NGOs for greater welfare of the society.

He sent a louder message that Nyishis and Apatanis would walk and live together harmoniously for times to come.

Land Management Parliamentary Secretary Padi Richo said that Nyishis and Apatanis are made for each other as was proved by the exchange of traditional dresses between the office bearers of ACLS and NES reflecting their age-old strong bond.
